-I'm Martin Hall and you're watching Extended Library. The book this week from one of golf's greatest teacher John Jacobs, the book "50 Years of Golfing Wisdom." In this wonderful book, John talks about the difference between the chip and a pitch. And, a lot of you don't know what that difference is. So, let me clear that up via John Jacobs, okay. A chip is a shot that will be hit low. It might be hit with an 8-iron or a 7-iron. It's not going to carry very far. It is going to roll some amount of distance. A chip shot would be played when the flag is at the back of the green and you're perhaps just off the green. It's a low runner. The pitch is just the opposite. The pitch should be going to be a high shot which is going to go up and stop quickly. That's the one you probably play when you've got not much green to work with. Okay, wrist action. The chip shot has minimal to no wrist action. It's sort of a one lever stroke. The pitch shot, on the other hand, has plenty of wrist action. Anytime you need height, rest assured if you need height, you definitely, definitely need wrist. Now, with both of those swings, the chip and the pitch, there's no flip. There's none of this. I want you to look very carefully at this and then promise me that you'll never do that again when you're swinging the short club. The club head should never pass the hands until after the ball is being hit. Never does that. And finally, the distance the ball goes is determined by the length, the amount of back swing that you make. If you have a short back swing, you'll hit a short shot. If you have a longer back swing, you'll hit a longer shot. Great wisdom from the superb teacher John Jacobs. Thanks for joining us on GolfChannel.com for the best in golf instruction. I'm Martin Hall and you'd been watching an Extended Version of Martin's Library. For more tips like this, tune in to School of Golf Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Eastern.
