KOHLER, Wis. – Blackwolf Run wasn’t set up tougher Saturday as a reaction to scoring and some top player’s comments about the course being easier than expected in this U.S. Women’s Open.
That’s the word from the U.S. Golf Association’s Ben Kimball, who is in charge of setup.
“I think mother nature decided the conditions today more than anything else,” Kimball said. “We knew it was going to be quite a windy day today and that’s why the golf course was playing the shortest distances it’s played all week (6,733 yards).”
Suzann Pettersen and Yani Tseng both spoke Friday about expecting a more brutal test with Blackwolf Run’s reputation. They got it Saturday.
“The actual setup and strategy for the week was done in advance of when I even got here this week,” Kimball said. “We didn’t have a knee jerk reaction to anything any player said.”
Winds were 15 mph Saturday with gusts to 25. Pin placements, players said, were a lot tougher.
