CALLAWAY MEMORIAL: The funeral for Ely Callaway, who died July 5, was a private affair. But the golf industry will remember Ely in a closed ceremony July 24 at company headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif., near San Diego. Most of the top executives in the game are expected to attend.
SPALDING IN NEW ACCESSORY ALLIANCE: Look for new golf bags under the Top-Flite label thanks to an alliance between Top-Flite owner Spalding Sports Worldwide and Dancorp Golf of Macedon, N.Y. Dancorp, which owns the Izzo, Gold Eagle and Par Classics brands, expects to have new bags ready by fall. Retail prices will range between $79 and $149. And yes, the new bags will have that dual strap Izzo for which Izzo is famous.
Other accessories planned for fall release are pop-up practice nets for both driving and chipping, as well as putting mats with adjustable Stimpmeter speeds.
IT TAKES AN (OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP) VILLAGE: Visitors to the Open Championship Village at Royal Lytham & St. Annes this week will have the opportunity to be fitted for TaylorMade-adidas Golf clubs. TMaG has a partnership with the folks from Full Swing Golf SimulatorS for the week. Potential fitees can step into the 18X13X10 simulator and thwack away at balls, which strike a wall-sized hitting screen. The screen gathers data that helps the golfer and clubfitters understand his game better.
