Tiger Keeps Saying Yesor At Least Nodding

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD: When I was a kid, you could get a tiger in your tank (remember those Esso ads?). Now you can get one for your dashboard.

tiger woods bobble head setNike Golf and Upper Deck have created the Tiger Woods bobble head doll collection just in time for Father's Day. Three versions of Tigers spring-like effect will be made; consumers can get one with the purchase of a dozen Nike Precision Tour Accuracy or Precision Tour Accuracy TW golf balls. The dolls will start showing up in golf shops May 27. Those who want to collect all three ' or just need a lot of golf balls ' may need to go to multiple locations to get the dolls they want.

Lets not have any of that Cabbage Patch unpleasantness, OK folks?

CLEAR THE ROAD: Today (May 22) is the day 16 tractor trailers deliver U.S. Open merchandise to the 30,000 square foot tent at Bethpage State Parks Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. And just in case you thought U.S. Open merchandise was an afterthought, lets review the numbers.

About 120,000 people bought U.S. Open gear at Southern Hills last year, and perhaps twice that came in and browsed, says Mary Lopuszynski, manager of U.S. Open merchandising. Based on that number, and on Bethpages proximity to New York City, Mary has ordered 140,000 hats and other headwear (she ordered 125,000 last year), as well as 50,000 golf shirts, 30,000 sleeves of logoed golf balls, and 70,000 ball markers.

Lopuszynski and her staff of 19 will be stocking shelves until May 27. There will be a special advance sale at the pavilion at Bethpage June 6-9.

PRICE OF SUCCESS: Every PGA Tour or major championship win has the potential to do more than bolster the reputation of a Big Five equipment company. It can also catapult a small company to stardom. Remember what the late Payne Stewarts 1999 U.S. Open win did for SeeMore putters?

Sonartec Inc. of Carlsbad, Calif. is hoping for that kind of magic. Nick Price was using a Sonartec 3-wood when he won the MasterCard Colonial last week. Word is that between doing back flips to express their joy, the folks at Sonartec are fielding a lot more phone calls.
