Woods shook off shaky start

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Tiger Woods turned his game around on his inward nine to post an ultimately half respectable two-over 74.

It obviously wasn't what he had in mind at the start of the day, but it could have been far, far worse considering he was four-over after 10 holes.

After struggling with a case of the lefts on his front nine, he was much more accurate coming home. Although he hit only three fairways on his inward half, several of those misses were only just off the fairway, including the par-five fifth and seventh holes.

Perhaps most impressively, Woods kept the lid on his fiery temper. If he muttered one expletive, this journalist failed to hear it.

His gallery was unusually quiet, perhaps because of his early 7:40 a.m. start meant that the booze consumption was at a minimum.

The gallery built to several thousand people by time he finished, but they were extremely well behaved. The birds, as well as the jets from nearby CLT, at times made more noise than the people.
