Coles had a 12-under 272 total on the Le Triomphe Country Club course and earned $94,500. After playing the first eight holes in 1 under with three birdies and two bogeys, he parred the final 10 holes.
I walked on the 10th tee and I knew I wasnt playing that good, Coles said. I knew I needed to suck it up. I just had to play the best nine holes that I could to get the job done. Im just glad no one was making birdies.
It was tough out there. Youve got to control your golf ball when its firm and fast like this and thats the way I like it.
The 39-year-old Coles, one of the tours shortest players at 5-foot-4, also won the 2002 Jacobs Creek Open and 2004 New Zealand PGA, both co-sanctioned with Australasian tour, and the 2006 Legend Financial Group Classic.
I have conditional status on the PGA TOUR, so well see what happens, said Coles, who finished 147th on the PGA TOUR money list in 2007. This is a good start this early in the year to be able to get back to the PGA TOUR (full-time). I havent sat down and thought about where Im going to play.
Thompson shot a 65 to take the $56,700 second-place check.
Michael Letzig (64), Brendon De Jonge (67) and Greg Owen (68) tied for third at 10 under, and Ryan Palmer (67) was another stroke back.
The start of play was delayed for 75 minutes because of thunderstorms that gave way to cloudy conditions and temperatures in high 70s.
