Duval told tournament officials he suffered the injury Tuesday and was waiting to see whether it healed. He played a practice round earlier in the week at Royal Troon with Brad Faxon and Davis Love III.
He was replaced in the field by David Griffiths, an alternate from local qualifying at Western Gailes.
Duval won the Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2001, but he has not won since a victory in Japan later that season. Mired in a slump so severe, Duval did not return to the PGA Tour until playing in the U.S. Open last month at Shinnecock Hills, where he missed the cut with rounds of 83-82.
