Eichelberger Leads Emerald Coast

RSS

MILTON, Fla. -- Dave Eichelberger shot his second straight 5-under-par 65 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead over Doug Tewell in the Emerald Coast Classic.

'I wish we could start right now,' said Eichelberger, winless since the 1999 U.S. Senior Open. 'I would feel quite comfortable with another 65.'

Eichelberger, who had a hole-in-one in the opening round on The Moors Golf Club, said his play began improving a couple weeks ago, although he was unsure why.

'I could tell from the flight of the ball,' he said. 'I'm swinging better somehow because I'm hitting the ball more solid.'

Tewell shot a 63, attacking the course early and keeping the ball down when the wind doubled to 20 mph.

'You get the ball up in the wind here and anything can happen,' Tewell said. 'Good low-ball pitchers are doing well today.'

Lanny Wadkins (63) was third, four stokes back at 134. Hubert Green (66) was at 135, and Dale Douglass (63), Tom Jenkins (68) and first-round leader Dana Quigley (73) followed at 136.

Douglass, 66, became the second-youngest pro to better his age with his 63. Then youngest was Joe Jimenez, who was 65 when he shot a 63 in 1991 GTE Northwest Classic.

'I probably shot as good as I could have shot,' Douglass said.
