Fergus birdied all four par-5 holes and parred the last four holes, the most difficult test on the Jack Nicklaus-designed at Hammock Beach course at the Ocean Club, to shoot a 5-under 67 and finish at 10-under 134. Fergus was a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR, but has yet to win in four seasons on the Champions Tour.
Brad Bryant, who shared the first-round lead with Fergus, shot a 68 and is one stroke back. He's tied with Tom Purtzer, who had a 66. Mark O'Meara (67) and Joe Ozaki (68) are at 8-under.
Hale Irwin (68), the all-time Champions Tour leader in victories and earnings, bogeyed his last three holes after briefly holding the lead, and is at 7-under with 64-year-old Raymond Floyd (69), Morgan (68) and R.W. Eaks (69).
