MADISON, Miss. – The first round of the waterlogged Viking Classic has been postponed until Friday after steady overnight rain and the chance for more kept golfers indoors.
Play never got started Thursday morning. After an initial two-hour delay stretched to three, officials announced the postponement.
Central Mississippi has been wet for much of August and September and course conditions were already soggy when golfers arrived this week.
The delay likely will raise the tension level for the dozens of golfers who hope to use the Viking Classic to move into the top 125 on the money list and secure a spot on next year’s PGA Tour.
The forecast for Friday isn’t much better with a 90-percent chance of thunderstorms.
