Han takes one-stroke lead at Indonesian Open

RSS

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Han Chang-won of South Korea shot a 5-under par 67 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the Indonesian Open at the Pantai Indah Kapuk course.

Japan’s Hideto Tanihara retained a share of second place after a 3-under round, one stroke behind Han’s total of 135.

Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, Michael Wright of Australia and Kiwi Michael Hendry, the defending champion and first-round leader, also hold a share of second.

Local favorite Rory Hie (138) finished 2 under after birdies on his final three holes. He is tied for sixth.

Han, the 19-year-old leading Order of Merit player in the field, holed six birdies to go along with a bogey Friday to put himself in contention.

“I holed a lot of putts today as I got a feel for the greens,” Han said. “If I can maintain that feeling I won’t be far away come Sunday.”

Defending champion Hendry’s bogey-free first round proved too difficult to repeat. He bogeyed four holes during his second round, including three in a row on the back nine.

Hendry said his putting needed to improve this weekend if he was to defend the title.

“If I can keep hitting it the way I am, I won’t need to putt well to stay in contention,” he said. “But if I want to have a chance to win I’ve got to putt better.”

Former Ryder Cup player Paul McGinley (143) shot a 3-under to move up to 45th place. The Irish veteran started the day tied for 83rd after a 2-over 74 in the first round.

McGinley recently recovered from a left knee injury that hampered his play for most of the year.
