Heineken Classic Dropped from Euro Schedule


2005 Heineken ClassicMELBOURNE, Australia -- One of Australias biggest golf tournaments has lost its date on the 2006 PGA European Tour, meaning the Heineken Classic wont be held next February at Royal Melbourne.
Tournament promoter Tony Roosenburg said Wednesday the Australian tournament will be replaced on the 2006 European Tour by the Dubai Desert Classic. Heineken dropped out as the sponsor after this years tournament.
Ernie Els won the tournament, jointly sanctioned by the European and Australasian tours, for three previous years, but was two strokes out of the playoff this year.
Roosenburg said he hopes to have another tournament scheduled at the Alister Mackenzie-designed Royal Melbourne in late 2006 or early 2007. Royal Melbourne was site of the 1998 Presidents Cup and has hosted a number of major Australian championships.
