Kuchar, a former U.S. Amateur champion who delighted crowds at Olympic Club in 1998 when he tied for 14th at the Open, picked up one of three spots at Ansley Golf Club with rounds of 68-67 to share medalist honors.
His 9-under 135 tied with Jason Dufner, while the other spots went to Lee Williams, who played on the last two Walker Cup teams, and Andrew Morse.
Kuchar, an All-American at Georgia Tech, won the Honda Classic four years ago but has struggled lately and failed to keep his PGA Tour card last year when he finished 159th on the money list.
'I've been playing well of late, and it continued today,' he said. 'My game stayed strong and I stayed out of trouble.'
Among those who failed to qualify at Ansley was former Masters champion Larry Mize.
In Tampa, Fla., former USGA president Fred Ridley didn't come close in his bid to be at Winged Foot in something other than a blue blazer. Ridley, who won the '75 U.S. Amateur and never turned pro, shot 77-86 on his home course at Old Memorial.
Billy Horschel, an All-American at Florida, led qualifiers in Tampa with a 73-67 to qualify for his first U.S. Open. He was joined by John Koskinen of Baraga, Mich., who once caddied at Old Memorial.
The final spot went to George McNeill, who won a five-for-one playoff after finishing at 141.
Matt Every, who played on the Walker Cup team last year and was low amateur at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, did not qualify.
Travis Hurst was the only player to break par at Fox Run Golf Club and shot 70-67 to win the sectional qualifier in St. Louis. He was joined by Jay Delsing, who has earned more than $3 million on the PGA Tour but has never finished higher than 74th on the money list.
It caps off a strong surge for Delsing, whose father died last month. He nearly won a Nationwide Tour event, then tied for fifth in the St. Jude Classic on the PGA Tour two weeks ago. His father, Jim Delsing, played baseball in the 1950s and was the pinch-runner after midget Eddie Gaedel was walked while playing for the St. Louis Browns.
