RSS

POTOMAC FALLS, Va. – Tyler McDaniel birdied the final two holes to win the Junior PGA Championship, and Amy Lee closed with a 15-foot par putt to top the girls' division.

The 17-year-old McDaniel, from Manchester, Ky., shot a 2-under 69 to finish at 10-under 274 at Trump National Golf Club - Washington, D.C. He won the Jack Nicklaus Trophy.

Sam Burns of Shreveport, La., had a 67 to finish a shot back.

The 16-year-old Lee, from Brea, Calif., also finished with a 69 for a 5-under 279 total. She won the Patty Berg Trophy. Abbey Carlsonof Lake Mary, Fla., shot a 71 to finish a stroke back.

McDaniel made a double bogey on the par-4 16th after losing his ball in the fescue on the right side of the fairway, and then birdied the par-5 17th and par-4 18th for the victory. His approach at the 18th stopped 4 feet from the hole he fist-pumped as his winning putt rolled into the cup.

''After 16 I knew I had to go birdie, birdie and I did, which was huge,'' said McDaniel, who has verbally committed to the University of Kentucky. ''I am pretty long off the tee so that helped. I like the look of 18. I can hit 3-wood off the tee and that club is always money. It gives me a good yardage into the green and I caught the approach shot perfect. ... This is my first big time, national win and it feels so good right now.''

Lee overcame a three-shot deficit in the final three holes, making a birdie on 17. Carlson closed with three straight bogeys.

''I'm excited and happy right now,'' said Lee. ''This is the biggest accomplishment I have had yet in golf and I feel honored to win this Championship. I'm a fighter and I knew I could do it.''
