Montgomerie Will Try to Qualify for British Open

NEWPORT, Wales -- Colin Montgomerie says he will do everything he can to qualify for the British Open, played next month at his home course at Royal Troon.

Montgomerie will not attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open. His participation there hangs on a special invitation. If he misses the U.S. Open, his string of playing in 49 consecutive majors will end.

The Scot, who has fallen outside the world's top 50, said he would take part in 36-hole qualifying for the British Open on June 28 at the Sunningdale course in southern England. It's the first time he has been required to qualify since 1990.

'I'm entered for Sunningdale. I'd like to finish it off there,' Montgomerie said Wednesday. 'If I don't qualify, there are other ways.'

That would include getting one of two spots available to the top players in five events leading up to The Open. Another spot is available from the European Open at Dublin's K Club. And another is available at the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

Both go to players who have not qualified.
