Monty Perplexed By Singhs Award

Colin Montgomerie was among those perplexed by Vijay Singh being honored as player of the year on the European PGA Tour.
The Fijian played only four times in Europe, and his best result was a tie for ninth'when he lost in the first round of the World Match Play Championship.
Singh was eligible for the award as an honorary lifetime member, and the voting panel figured since he was on the ballot, it was tough to pick anyone else. Besides, the European tour counts the majors on its schedule, just as the PGA Tour counts the British Open, and Singh did win the PGA Championship.
But the panel overlooked Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, who won four times in the 04 European season; and Ernie Els, who set an earnings record by winning the Order of Merit for the second straight year.
Sorry, but I think the European tour player of the year should be European, Montgomerie said. When we heard it was Vijay, everybody was a bit What? I think were going to have a discussion. You could take the word tour out of the title and there could be an overseas award as well.
Singh tied for 15th at the Volvo PGA in May, tied for 20th at the British Open and tied for 18th in the Dunhill Links Championship in October. He did not play the World Golf Championship event in Ireland
