Notes Caddie Taking Break From Singh

RSS

Dave Renwick said he needed a two-month break as a caddie, but it sounds like the stress came more from his boss'Vijay Singh'than the grind of the PGA Tour.

I just wasnt happy with the way things are going or the way I was getting treated, Renwick told The Scotsman newspaper. I just wasnt getting the respect I deserve.

Renwick is believed to have had the richest year ever by a caddie. Assuming he got the standard 10 percent of the earnings, he made over $1 million. But it apparently came at a cost.

I never got a Good morning from Vijay, or good club after a shot, or have a nice night at the end of the day. It was either nothing or a negative if he did speak to me, Renwick said. Being courteous isnt much to ask. Theres only so much of that stuff you can take, no matter how good the money is.

Singh is using his trainer as a caddie the first two weeks, then will return to Paul Tesori.

WILSON NOT GETTING HOME SUPPORT
Dean Wilson had just made it through Q-school when someone offering congratulations said he would see the 35-year-old from Hawaii at the Sony Open, the first full-field event of the year.

Wilson laughed, knowing the history at his hometown tournament.

It might be time to write another chapter.

Hawaiis best tour player was the fourth alternate when the 144-man field was announced Friday.

Are you kidding me? said Mike Weir, his teammate at BYU. I always thought it was a shame that Dean doesnt get the respect as the only tour player from Hawaii. For him not to get in Sony is a bit embarrassing for the tournament. Youve got to support your local guy.

Wilson, best known on tour for playing with Annika Sorenstam in the Colonial, has not had much success on the PGA Tour, but he won six times in Japan and captured two of its majors in 2001. In previous years, he never received a sponsors exemption, only getting into the Sony Open through Monday qualifying.

Sony officials give most of the exemptions to Japanese players for marketing purposes, and theres nothing wrong with that. Not even Wilson would complain about a spot going to 15-year-old Michelle Wie, who is responsible for any spike in ticket sales.

But there were some curious exemptions, such as Omar Uresti.

We wanted to have him, but Sony had others on their list, tournament director Ray Stosik said. Dean was one of those right near the top. At the time when the selections were made, it was looking like he had a good chance.

Wilson ordinarily would have made it into the Sony Open through the pecking order at the start of the year, which alternates between the top 20 on the Nationwide Tour money list and the 35 players who made it through Q-school. But a couple of late entries -- such as Tom Kite, Craig Stadler and Steve Jones'knocked him down the list.

Wilson tried to qualify Monday, but shot 67 to finish one shot out of the playoff.

ANNIKA WARMUP
Annika Sorenstam is among those who like the long offseason on the LPGA Tour, when she can clear her mind and do other things.

But the first major shows up quickly, and thats why Sorenstam might make her 05 debut a little earlier.

A year ago, she won the Safeway International in Phoenix and then struggled at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, a quick end to her dream of winning all four majors.

Last year I played really good at Phoenix, so I cant complain it wasnt working, Sorenstam said. But its nice to get into a rhythm a little bit. I want to focus on the majors and be ready. Its OK to hit the ball well, but youve got to be able to score.

Sorenstam is not going to South Africa for the Womens World Cup, so she likely will play either Feb. 24-26 in Hawaii, or make her debut in Mexico City a week later. That would give her one more tournament before defending in Phoenix, then heading to Nabisco in pursuit of the Grand Slam.

I played great in Phoenix, but maybe I wasnt ready for the competition, she said. You can do four rounds, but then can you do another four? Ive got to try something different. Obviously, it didnt work last year.

As for her goals beyond the Grand Slam?

Sorenstam said she will have another two weeks off before going to the PGA Merchandise Show and slowly getting into the work.

Hopefully, by then things will shape up what I want to do, how Im going to approach it and what I need to do.

THE BIG HUNT
David Toms grew up in Louisiana and Chad Campbell is from west Texas, so hunting is one of their favorite hobbies.

But in Hawaii?

Tournament host Gary Planos is famous for pampering players during the stay at Kapalua, but he went to a new level this year by chartering a plane for Toms and Campbell to go hunting on the Big Island.

It was awesome, Toms said. I got a pheasant and an erkel.

Just goes to show you how much Hawaii has to offer.

Campbell heard about the possibility of a hunting trip last year, and made sure he arrived in Hawaii in time for the pre-Mercedes Championships trip. Campbell didnt divulge details of his outing, but casting his eyes to the ground and muttering something like, They gave me one, made it clear the excursion wasnt a big success for him.
