RIO DE JANEIRO – Heather Bowie Young of the United States made eight birdies for a 6-under 66 Saturday to take a two-shot lead at the LPGA’s Brazil Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
Second-ranked Suzann Pettersen of Norway was tied for second with Australian Lindsey Wright after the first round at the Itanhanga Golf Club.
Young seized the lead by making five birdies on the front nine, than added three after the turn to help offset bogeys on the third and eleventh holes.
No. 4-ranked Cristie Kerr was tied for 16th in the 30-player field after a 72 on a cold day in Rio.
The third edition of the 36-hole, $720,000 tournament ends Sunday.
Golf will return to the Olympics for the first time in more than 100 years at the 2016 Games in Rio.
