Phil Mickelson Withdraws from Ford

RSS

MIAMI -- Phil Mickelson withdrew from the Ford Championship at Doral on Monday because his wife is getting closer to having their third child.

Ford is in its first year as title sponsor of the PGA Tour event, and it signed Mickelson to a major endorsement in September.

'While I always knew I might have to withdraw from the tournament, I'm still disappointed to have to miss it,' Mickelson said. 'Family has always been very important to Amy and myself, and we know Ford feels the same way.'

Mickelson threatened to withdraw from the final round of the 1999 U.S. Open if his wife went into labor. She had their first child the day after Payne Stewart beat Mickelson by one stroke at Pinehurst No. 2.

Mickelson, the No. 3 player in the world, is the second top player to withdraw from Doral. Ernie Els, the world's No. 2 player, decided late last week to play in the Dubai Desert Classic on the European tour.

Els was the defending champion at Dubai and Doral.
