JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – D.A. Points has moved into contention at the PGA Championship, shooting a 67 in the second round that left him at 4-under and three shots off the lead.
Points was a first-time PGA Tour winner this year, taking the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and also winning the pro-celebrity competition with comedian Bill Murray.
No one’s laughing about his play Friday at Atlanta Athletic Club. He followed an opening 69 with the best round of the morning starters to move toward the top. He had five birdies and two bogeys, the last at the difficult 18th, to close the round.
Points was a three-time Illinois amateur champion who reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur in 1996 before he got knocked out by eventual champion Tiger Woods.
