DUBLIN, Ohio – Justin Rose has finished with a 65, playing his best golf after a two-hour rain delay and building a two-shot lead over Phil Mickelson and other early starters at the Memorial.
Defending champion Tiger Woods didn’t play until Thursday afternoon, and with another half-hour delay was unlikely to finish.
Rose ran off five birdies in a six-hole stretch late in his round on a Muirfield Village course that was even softer after the morning storms. He was two shots clear of Mickelson, Andres Romero of Argentina, Rory Sabbatini and Michael Letzig.
Mickelson can go to No. 1 in the world with a victory this week, and he has said he wants to join a strong list of winners who have been handed the trophy by tournament host Jack Nicklaus.
