WINDERMERE, Fla. – Two-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen scored 25 points Thursday in the Diamond Resorts Invitational to take a two-point lead in the modified Stableford event for celebrity athletes and entertainers.
Players receive six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, zero for bogey and minus-2 for double bogey and higher.
Saberhagen had an eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie run on Nos. 2-5 on his second nine at the Golden Bear Club at Keene's Point in the inaugural 54-hole event. It's the first time he has led after any round in his 11 national celebrity tournament starts.
''New territory,'' Saberhagen said. ''I don't put myself up in that elite category, but it's fun to kind of experience one day of it.''
Former tennis champion Mardy Fish was second. Former hockey star Mike Modano and major leaguer Phil Nevin were three points behind Saberhagen.
Fish had 25 points through 13 holes thanks to seven birdies, but made two double bogeys and a bogey on his last five holes.
''Leaking oil coming in,'' Fish said.
Former pitcher Mark Mulder, the American Century Championship winner last summer in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, was tied for 19th in the 65-person field with 14 points.
