Sorenstam Voted Top Swedish Athlete

RSS

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Annika Sorenstam, coming off one of the most spectacular seasons in LPGA Tour history, is Sweden's top athlete for 2002.

The 32-year-old Stockholm native topped the most prestigious sportswriters poll with 1,190 points. Second went to Kajsa Bergqvist, the world's top-ranked female high jumper and a European champion this year, who received 1,149 points. Christian Olsson, the European triple jump champion, was third with 922 points.

Sorenstam won 13 times around the world, twice as much as any other player, male or female. Her 11 wins on the LPGA Tour were the most by any golfer - Tiger Woods included - since Mickey Wright reached that total in 1964.

When the LPGA Tour season ended last month, Sorenstam tied or set 20 records and shattered two of her own -- lowest scoring average (68.70) and earnings ($2.8 million).

She already has won 42 times, tied with Sandra Haynie at No. 8 on the career list, almost halfway home to the record 88 victories by Kathy Whitworth.

All that's missing from Sorenstam's resume are two majors keeping her from the career Grand Slam - the LPGA Championship and the Women's British Open. The latter means more because she is European.

A total of 155 sportswriters from the Stockholm region voted in the poll.
