Southern Hills Trying to Land 2007 PGA Championship

RSS

PGA of America (150x150)TULSA, Okla. -- Officials with Southern Hills are negotiating with the PGA of America to host the 2007 PGA Championship.

'I believe it will happen, but we don't have a signed contract,' Southern Hills general manager Nick Sidorakis told the Tulsa World. 'We're close, though.'

It would be the club's seventh major championship. Southern Hills hosted the PGA Championship in 1994, 1982 and 1970.

'It's an absolutely great golf course and a fantastic facility that is perfect for a major championship,' said Nick Price, who won the PGA title in Tulsa in 1994.

Price, 45, would be eligible to play on the Senior Tour if the PGA Championship returns to Southern Hills in 2007.

Jim Awtrey, PGA of America's chief executive officer and a native Oklahoma, asked club officials shortly after the 1994 championship if they wanted to host the event in 1999, but the board declined the offer.

The 1995 and 1996 PGA Tour Championships already were set for the course, and Southern Hills officials didn't want anything to get in the way of their pursuit of the 2001 U.S. Open, which the course was awarded.

Awtrey attended last year's event and said the course had a proven record as a host of major championships.

The only major event Southern Hills has not hosted is the Ryder Cup. The PGA of America has not discussed the Ryder Cup with Southern Hills officials, Sidorakis said. U.S. sites for the Ryder Cup are booked through 2011.

Sidorakis said hosting the 2007 PGA Championship is an honor for the club.

'It will be the fourth PGA Championship that Southern Hills hosts, most by any in the nation,' he said.
