Starkjohann Leads PGA Pro Championship


PGA Professional National ChampionshipSUNRIVER, Oregon -- Chris Starkjohann shot a 5-under 66 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the PGA Professional National Championship.
Starkjohann, a teaching pro at Hodges Golf Learning Center in Southern California, had five birdies on the front nine of Meadows Golf Course at Sunriver Resort. He came in fifth in this event last year.
Bill Amundsen, the head pro at Skyline Golf Club in Black River Falls, Wis., and Frank Esposito, the head pro at Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park, N.J., finished at 4-under. Kevin Burton, the golf coach at Boise State, was 4-under on the par-72 Crosswater Golf Club Course.
The final 36 holes will be played on the Crosswater course. The field includes 312 professionals.
The low 20 scores earn a berth at the 89th PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 6-12.
