Three-Way Tie at Club Pro Championship

RSS

PGA of AmericaAlan Morin bogeyed two of his first seven holes to drop into a three-way tie for the lead in the weather-delayed third round of the PGA Club Professional Championship on Saturday.

Lightning and heavy rained suspended play in the early afternoon. The earliest starters completed 16 holes while the leaders played seven.

Morin of Lake Worth, Fla., who was the 36-hole leader, made back-to-back bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes and dropped to 2 over for the tournament. Travis Long of Henderson, Nev., and Scott Spence of Shorewood, Minn., also were at 2 over.

Gusting winds made play rough Friday at the Ocean Course and scores weren't any better Saturday. Based on the scoring average of each hole Saturday, players were on target to again break the one-round tournament record with an average round of 80.484.

Friday's average score was 79.065, shattering the previous record of 78.00 set in 1981 at PGA National.

Long bogeyed three consecutive holes before he made a birdie on No. 7.

'It seems like it's not a real test of golf for everyone; it's a real test of patience,' Long said. 'When you finally get out there it's an adventure during the swing, when the ball is in the air and when it lands.'

Spence had two birdies and two bogeys through the nine holes he played.

Mike Small of Savoy, Ill., had the day's best round, going 2 under through 13 holes. He was tied for fourth at 3 over with Craig Thomas of Oceanside, N.Y.

Suzy Whaley, who became the first female PGA professional to earn a spot in the Club Pro Championship in 2002 and in 2003 the first in 58 years to qualify for a PGA Tour event a year later, was 7 over for the day and tied for 51st.

The top 25 finishers earn spots in the PGA Championship, which will be played at Baltusrol in Springfield, N.J., in August.

Tee times for Sunday were moved up to complete the third round and groups will start on both the front and back nine for the final round.
