QUEENSLAND, Australia -- Australians Peter Senior and Steve Collins each shot 8-under 64 Thursday to share the lead after the first round of the Australian PGA.

Scoring conditions during the opening round were ideal and more than half of the 156-player field finished at par or better. There was no significant wind and recent rain left greens at the Hyatt Regency resort course soft.

'My confidence has been boosted with how I've been playing,' said Senior, who finished tied for 11th at the Australian Masters last week. 'The wind didn't pick up like I thought it would, and I made some birdies on difficult holes that got me on my way. I hit to six or seven feet about eight or nine times.'

Australian Rod Pampling was a shot back in third while fellow Australian Martin Doyle shot a 66.

Eight golfers shot 67 in the opening round, including Greg Norman, whose caddie was tennis player Lleyton Hewitt.

'He never got in the way today, he knew the yardages, and there wasn't one situation where I thought 'Was he OK?' Norman said of Hewitt.
