Vickers Wants More Respect for The International

2005 The INTERNATIONALThe president of the International said Thursday he is not satisfied with the tournament's place on the PGA Tour schedule and is pushing for changes when the new TV contract starts in 2007.
'We want to be the best at what we do, and we can't be the best at what we do' with the current spot on the schedule, Jack Vickers said.
Much of the International's problem lies in the fact that Tiger Woods hasn't played at Castle Pines since the tournament was moved from after the PGA Championship to the week before the year's final major. Vickers said that's a prime topic whenever he goes looking for new sponsors.
'It's a definite loss when you don't have him here,' Vickers said.
Weather has also long been a problem. Thursday's first round was washed out by steady rain. The first round will be played Friday. More common, though, are afternoon thunderstorms, which have delayed play in each of the previous 19 years the tournament has been held.
And while Vickers realizes a tournament in Colorado must be played during the summer, he would like to see a more limited field so more rounds could be completed even when weather is bad.
Vickers has been talking with PGA Tour officials about moving his tournament to a better date. He thinks the tour has a problem in its inability to get all the top players to all its biggest tournaments.
It's an issue that always seems to come up at the International.
'Players have the right to play where they want to play,' he said. 'I want to put on a golf tournament with enough class that they're going to want to be here. But I can't do it on my own. It's a two-way street.'
