PGA Tour (75x100)LEMONT, Ill. -- Casey Wittenberg has shed his amateur status after just one year at Oklahoma State.

The 2003 U.S. Amateur runner-up is making his professional debut this week in the Cialis Western Open.

'College was a great experience for me. I think it was something I needed to do for a year,' he said Wednesday. 'But I felt like my game would improve faster if I took this road versus staying in college for three more years.'

The 19-year-old Wittenberg tied for 13th in the Masters and tied for 36th in the U.S. Open. In the Masters, he had three birdies and an eagle in his last six holes to shoot even-par 288, the best score by an amateur since Charlie Coe in 1962.

'I don't have any expectations like I'm going to become No. 1 on the PGA Tour or anything like that,' Wittenberg said. 'I realize there's going to be a learning curve.'
