Fitting is the fact that the tournament is being played on an old military facility - Fort Ord - with all the small battles to be played out this week.
Four men ' Patrick Moore, Jason Gore, Arron Oberholser and Cliff Kresge ' will be going after the aptly named Battlefield Promotion. The aforementioned players all have two victories on the year and a third would get them an immediate ticket to the PGA Tour.
Also being fought for is position on the Buy.Com Tour money list. The top 15 at seasons end are also granted membership to the Big Show in 2003. At the moment, only $6,000 separates No. 15 through No. 19.
Another battle being waged is the fight for entry into the season-ending Tour Championship. The top 55 on the all-important money list after the next three tournaments get invites to the final event of the year, to be held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Alabama.
Gore, who is the junior circuits hottest player in winning the last two weeks, will try for the hat trick and move on to wage war on the PGA Tour.
But first, there are plenty of battles to be played out this week in the Monterey Peninsula.
