You never get a second chance to make a first impression

RSS

Here we are halfway through the season, and we present our competitors with the biggest twist in the game… so far:  “Playback”. Will’s response at breakfast was classic. I did his interview that evening, and I can tell you he wasn’t too thrilled about the prospect of an eliminated player returning to the house. Oren, on the opposite end of the spectrum, was loving the twists and turns of the season. I thought it was great that Piri made it to the validation challenge at the end. He made some questionable decisions in the first episode that led to a shocking early departure, but it was clear that he’d learned from the experience, and was on a mission to get back into the mix. Guess we’ll find out next week…

From the Cutting Room Floor

One piece of video that I really hated leaving out of this show was from Justin’s post-knock out interview. The interview as a whole gave a glimpse into his motivation. Unfortunately, it was such a departure from everything else we’d heard from Justin that we just couldn’t get it in without feeling like it got so longwinded that it brought the show to a grinding halt.  I’ve talked to the internet producers about throwing that up as a special piece online, so look for that on GolfChannel.com.

Final Cut

We knew this episode was going to end in a cliffhanger. We just didn’t know exactly where the cliff was going to be. The show 6 team needed to know where we were going to leave the story, because our end was their beginning. Since episodes 5 and 6 were in post production simultaneously, it wasn’t going to work well to cut front to back because we wouldn’t sort it out until the end of their edit. So, we cut the conclusion of our show first, so that they could know how their show was going to start.

The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth

Here’s a fun fact about Big Break: we create the challenges and the rules for the challenges in the months leading up to the shoot. The “Playback Show”, as an initial concept, was already a part of the series on my first day for this season way back in October 2010. Long before the cast was finalized, and long before we shot our first day of production in January. Since Big Break gives away prizes to the winners of a season, and winners of specific challenges, it falls under the auspices of the U.S. Communications Act, US Code Title 47, Chapter 5, Subchapter V. Look it up, it makes for some light reading. Just throwing that out there because any time we do a challenge like this, some viewers invariably think it has something to do with the public response to competitors that were eliminated in previous weeks.
