2007 U.S. OpenOAKMONT, Pa. -- Heres the scoop on that new Nike commercial that will begin airing on GOLF CHANNEL Thursday and also appear on NBC during the weekend: The subject is Fathers Day and the imminent arrival of Tiger and Elin Woods first child.
 
The stars of the ad are a small golf bag with the name Baby Woods on the side and the Nike clubs being readied to go into that bag.

It was filmed at Nike Golfs Research and Development facility in Fort Worth, Texas. And the man shown grinding Baby Woods irons is Mike Taylor. Taylor is Nike Golfs main man when it comes to custom club work for Nikes players, including Tiger.
 
The people around Taylor in the ad are also Nike Golf employees. The clubs are not for sale and Woods now has possession of the clubs. In the bag are an SQ small driver, four irons and a putter.
 
JOHNNY REDUX:

On the 288-yard, par-3 eighth at Oakmont: In the old days they used to play par-3s 250 when guys could not hit it 250. Im not going to cry for the guys is what Ill say. Putting it in front of the green is fantastic. Just short of the green is fantastic. You can just chip it up the hill and make your par. Its not like you have an island green at 300 yards.
 
On changes since Shinnecock at the 2004 U.S. Open: When Vijay Singh, after two or three rounds at Shinnecock, was dead last in driving accuracy and No. 1 in greens hit, that should have made Ben Hogan puke. Think about it, dead last in driving accuracy, and the guy is No. 1 in greens hit. That cant be what the USGA wanted. But the reason why that happened is that not only was the rough a little skimpy, but the ball was rolling 60, 80 yards, so those holes were just a driver and 9-iron, wedge for those guys.
 
On the danger of making a course set-up too hard: Remember this: When you make a championship so ridiculous, you can get ridiculous winners. You can get winners that will never ever win again, just happened to have a hot putting week or a good bounce here and there.
 
YOUNGER STILL:
Richard Lee, 16 years old and the youngest player in the field, will turn professional after the U.S. Open regardless of how he plays. Lee is a high-school sophomore in Arizona who shot a 62 when he was 12 years old. He is one of 12 amateurs in the field.
 
RETURN TO PINEHURST:
The USGA officially announced Wednesday that the 2014 U.S. Open will return to Pinehurst No. 2.
 
Prior to 2014, the Open will be played at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, Calif., from June 12-15, 2008; at Bethpage State Parks Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y., from June 18-21, 2009; at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif., from June 17-20, 2010; at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., from June 16-19, 2011; at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., from June 14-17, 2012; and at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., from June 13-16; 2013.
 
This will be the eighth time the No. 2 course at Pinehurst Resort has hosted a USGA championship, including two previous U.S. Opens. Payne Stewart defeated Phil Mickelson in an epic 1999 battle. Micheal Campbell also prevailed in 2005.
