Final results: Auburn, Raleigh, Illinois regionals


AUBURN, Ala. – The NCAA men’s regionals wrapped up Saturday at six sites around the country. The low five teams and low individual on a non-qualifying team from each regional advance to the May 23-28 NCAA Championship at Prairie Dunes.

Here are the final-round results from the Auburn, Raleigh and Sugar Grove regionals (click here for live scoring): 

Auburn Regional, at Auburn (Ala.) University Club:

Winner: Alabama (-11)

Runner-up: Kennesaw State (+11) 

Also advanced: Auburn (+14); Virginia Tech (+18); Texas (+20)

Just missed: New Mexico (+21); UNCG (+22); BYU (+22)

Medalist: Marco Iten, Austin Peay State (-8) 

Skinny: Top-ranked Alabama romped to a 22-shot win as three players finished inside the top 7 individually. … Host Auburn was in trouble of falling outside of the top-5 cut line, but Will Long made an albatross on the par-5 16th, then Niclas Carlsson followed with an eagle in the next group. … Louisville had a chance to catch Texas for the fifth and final spot, but the Cardinals dropped four shots on the final two holes to finish T-7. … Austin Peay’s Marco Iten matched the round of the week, a 5-under 67, to earn medalist honors and punch his ticket to Prairie Dunes. 

Raleigh Regional, at Lonnie Poole Golf Course:

Winner: Georgia Tech (-27)

Runner-up: Washington (-10)

Also advanced: Texas A&M (-3); Kentucky (+4); Florida State (+8)

Just missed: Texas Tech (+12); Wake Forest (+17); Mercer (+18)

Medalist: Jonathan Sanders, Washington (-10)

Skinny: Top seed Georgia Tech was 13 shots worse Saturday, but it didn’t matter at all as the Yellow Jackets cruised to a 17-shot win. … Wake Forest had to make up a six-shot deficit in the final round, but instead the team shot 12-over 296 to tumble down the leaderboard. … Washington’s Jonathan Sanders shot 68-67-68 to earn medalist honors by three shots. … Wake Forest’s Cyrus Stewart also is headed to Kansas after being the low finisher on a non-qualifying team.

Sugar Grove Regional, at Rich Harvest Farms (Ill.): 

Winner: Illinois (+16)

Runner-up: UAB (+18)

Also advanced: Purdue (+30); USC (+32); Cal (+32)

Just missed: Clemson (+34); Kent State (+36) 

Medalist: Brian Campbell, Illinois (-5)

Skinny: Second-seeded Illinois overtook UAB on the final day to steal the team title. The Illini’s Brian Campbell was the only player to finish in the top 10 individually, as he shot 5-under 211 to win medalist honors by four shots. He was one of only two players to finish 54 holes under par. … Cal, the No. 4 team in the country and a six-time winner this season, was on the cut line all day at Rich Harvest Farms. The Golden Bears avoided a playoff when Clemson dropped four shots on the last two holes. The Tigers also had to count two 78s on the final day en route to a 19-over 307, the highest score among the top 10 teams. ... Kent State's Taylor Pendrith earned the low-individual spot.
