Patrick Rodgers keeps moving closer to Tiger’s record.
The Stanford junior won his third consecutive tournament Sunday at The Goodwin, the Cardinal’s home event.
Rodgers shot 14-under 196 (63-69-64) to win by six shots over USC’s Rico Hoey. No. 7 Stanford also won the team title at 25-under 815, 20 shots clear of UCLA.
Rodgers, who entered this week at No. 3 in Golfstat’s rankings, has four individual titles this season and is the clear frontrunner for NCAA Player of the Year. Three of his victories have come on big-league ballparks – Erin Hills, PGA West and Southern Highlands.
This latest triumph pushes Rodgers’ career win total to nine. Woods holds the school record with 11 victories.
Rodgers has, at most, four more events to try and catch Woods. Stanford’s next tournament is the April 12-13 Western Intercollegiate, followed by the April 25-27 Pac-12 Championship. If the Cardinal can advance past the NCAA regionals, Rodgers would get one final crack at the NCAA Championship.
Last month, Rodgers, the top-ranked player in the R&A World Amateur Rankings, announced that he would turn pro after this year’s NCAA Championship.
