Here are 7 more ways top performers use to build and maintain confidence. In my 18 years as a Performance Success Coach, confidence is one of the most highly sought after performance traits. Why is confidence so elusive? Why does it seem to come and go leaving people to doubt their own ability to perform? Even the greats experience feelings of doubt and indecision. Everyone does! However, champions have learned that its not the doubt thats important, its what you do about it AND how you use it that matters most. This is what separates a good performer from a great performer. You can be confident in yourself, your game, in your organization, at home or anywhere else! An earlier article listed 8 confidence builders and here are 7 more:
 
1. ACCEPT THE UPS AND DOWNS
Champions are smart enough not to fight with reality. They realize that every performance has its own ups and downs built into it. Its a natural part of the flow of things. Sometimes youll get breaks, sometimes you wont. Accept this reality and keep your confidence at a stable level.
 
2. USE YOUR BODY
Top performers know they can use their bodies to trigger confidence. A simple change in body language, pace of step as you move or an eye of the tiger look can make all the difference in your confidence levels. The mind affects the body and the body affects the mind.
 
3. KNOW THAT COMPETING IS A CHOICE
Champions in any arena know that competing well has little to do with wins and losses. Regardless of outcomes on any given day you can ALWAYS compete well. Always do your best. Your best will change from time to time but DOING your best doesnt have to! Its a choice and it can be made at any time.
 
4. CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES
How can you maintain confidence if you rarely acknowledge your successes? Champions realize this fact and regularly celebrate their successes no matter how small or large! While others negate the positive things they do (or certainly dont give them much weight), top performers allow themselves the luxury of highlighting, reviewing and celebrating their successes.
 
5. DONT TAKE IT PERSONALLY
Learn to separate performance confidence from personal confidence. If you are playing poorly you don have tot take it personally. A bad performance does not mean youve lost your skills. A poor decision does not mean you are always wrong. Separate what you do from who you are and you can be more resilient and recover from adversity more quickly.
 
6. DO TAKE IT PERSONALLY
Heres one of those paradoxes again! There are times when taking a poor performance personally CAN trigger confidenceif you have the right mindset! This occurs when you use a poor performance to trigger yourself to kick it into gear, get going, be inspired and pull yourself out of the rut! In this instance, taking it personally is a confidence building mechanism.
 
7. FOCUS ON EFFORT, NOT WINNING
Top performers remain confident by measuring themselves by their effort and not whether they are always winning or losing. Confidence built on effort can lead to better results. They know that if the effort is there, the outcomes will take care of themselves.
