McIlroy has new driver, and he's going to use it

GULLANE, Scotland – Rory McIlroy has a new driver in his bag for this week’s British Open, and he intends to use it more often than many players in the field.

After missing the cut three weeks ago at The Irish Open, the Northern Irishman met with Nike reps to find a more reliable driver. He came away with the Nike VR_S Covert driver, the same club that Tiger Woods was testing earlier this week and may put in play for the Open.

“It’s more of a pear shape, but it encourages the clubface to close over a little bit more,” said McIlroy, who this season is 103rd in driving accuracy and 170th in right rough tendency. “My bad drive this year has been losing it to the right. So this is encouraging the clubface to square up on impact and obviously I’m not getting that right shot anymore, which is a huge plus.”

Depending on the wind, McIlroy said he will hit anywhere between five to seven drivers each round. Many players have said this week that they will employ a more conservative strategy off the tee to keep the ball in play, and also because long irons and fairway woods are running out in the firm-and-fast fairways.
