Ping doubles charity from Bubba's driver sales

Ping announced Tuesday it would be selling 5,000 limited edition, pink G20 drivers in honor of Bubba Watson's Masters win.

Proceeds from the sales will benefit Watson's 'Bubba & Friends Drive to a Million' – an effort to raise $1 million this year to support organizations fighting cancer. Starting June 1, the drivers will retail for $430.

The clubmaker originally was going to donate 5 percent of the proceeds to the effort, but announced Thursday it would be increasing the donation to $50 per club. The total donation will increase from $107,500 to $250,000.

“We looked back at the last few days and realized that with all the tremendous energy Bubba has created with his win at the Masters and for our brand, we needed to do more with this opportunity to give back to those in need,” said Ping chairman and CEO John Solheim in a release.

Ping had already pledged to donate $300 for the first 300 drives of 300 yards or longer on the PGA Tour this season for a total of $90,000. Added to an initial pledge of $10,000 and the driver proceeds, the company will donate $350,000 to the cause.
