Players using driving irons specifically for Muirfield

GULLANE, Scotland – Equipment changes are nothing new at the Open Championship, but a dry, hot spring has made Muirfield particularly crusty for this week’s event which prompted some players to turn back the clock.

Ping unveiled the Rapture driving iron this week, a stainless steel 2-iron engineered for a low, penetrating ball flight, according to company sources. That’s in sharp contrast to modern golf’s move toward equipment intended to produce a higher ball flight.

Although it was just introduced on Monday at Muirfield, four players were already testing the Rapture – including Hunter Mahan, Angel Cabrera, Billy Horschel and 1989 Open champion Mark Calcavecchia.

Many players have been tinkering with equipment in recent weeks with an eye toward a brown and bouncy Muirfield, including Jason Day who will likely have a 1-iron in the bag this week.
