The Bradley bag breakdown

Keegan Bradley won the 93rd PGA Championship in dramatic fashion. Here’s a look at the equipment that catapulted him into the major championship winner’s circle.

First, let’s talk about that putter: Bradley became the first male player to win a major championship for the under-50 set by using a belly putter. The putter that holds the distinction is an Odyssey White Hot XG Sabertooth putter. It measures 46.75 degrees, has 3 degree of loft and a lie angle of 67.5 degrees.

Bradley began using the putter last year on the Nationwide Tour at the Stadion Classic, but nearly switched to a conventional putter the week of the Byron Nelson, which he won in a playoff.

As for the rest of the bag: Bradley is a Cleveland staff member, so he is through the bag with their equipment except the flat stick.

Payday for Keegs?: This is a contract year for Bradley, as his deal with Cleveland Golf ends at the conclusion of 2011, according to a source. There’s a temptation to cash in for more money, certainly, but look at the cautionary tales of Camilo Villegas, Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell in 2011 – all who made big bucks switches – to think twice about such a move.

Personal fitting: While at the PGA Championship, I made a stop over to the Golf Club of Georgia to have a Hot Stix fitting done. They’re kind of like the Consumer Reports of golf fitting.

They analyze your swing (assuming it’s consistent) for tendencies, swing speeds, launch angles and such. It’s a professional fitting done by a teaching pro that’s Tour caliber. Based upon the fitting, they help you see if the equipment you currently use fits your game and, if it doesn’t, what equipment – club head, shaft, grip, everything – would be best for you. They’ll order it for you and set it to your specs for an up charge on top of the cost of the set, or you can take the profile and go to a pro shop to order independently.

Fortunately for me, my equipment fits my game, but I did wind up increasing the lie angle on my clubs by a full two degrees. I’ll report back on Twitter about how that goes.
