Expert picks: Greenbrier Classic

The PGA Tour heads to West Virginia for The Greenbrier Classic. Each week, a panel of experts will offer up their picks from four groups of players, based on Golf Channel's fantasy game, Fantasy Challenge. We will also keep track of their scores and standings. The panel includes: senior writers Rex Hoggard, Randall Mell and Jason Sobel; contributors John Hawkins and Win McMurry; editorial director Jay Coffin; 'Morning Drive' host Gary Williams and staff writer Ryan Lavner. They are joined by former 'Saturday Night Live' star Norm Macdonald, who will serve as a celebrity guest.

Ryan Lavner

Group 1: Webb Simpson: No wins this year, but he’s coming off his fifth top-10 finish of the season. Has a pair of top 10s the last two years at Old White TPC.

Group 2: Graham DeLaet: Had another good week at Congressional, where he posted his second consecutive top 10 and fifth overall. He hasn’t finished outside the top 30 since May.

Group 3: Roberto Castro: Was impressed by the way he hung in AT&T, resulting in his first top 10 of the season. He has four top 25s in his last six starts, and his closing 63 last year at Greenbrier gave him a T-7.

Group 4: D.H. Lee: He’s been hit or miss this season, as his T-3 last week was just his two top 10 this season. Maybe he’s inspired after his middle-finger incident over the weekend.

Rex Hoggard

Group 1: Phil Mickelson: It’s always a question as to which Lefty shows up on a given week, but considering Mickelson has three top-3 finishes in his last four starts he’s a safe bet against a relatively weak field.

Group 2: Scott Piercy: Played solid at The Greenbrier last year (T-12) and is a birdie machine (he’s 21st on the PGA Tour with a 3.79 birdie average), which is key on the Old White course.

Group 3: Brian Gay: When you putt as well as BG, any time you play on a classic-style layout you have to like his chances.

Group 4: Luke List: The first-year Tour player hasn’t been as consistent as he would have liked, but he normally plays his best toward the end of the season when the pressure is most intense.

Jason Sobel

Group 1: Webb Simpson: He was in contention here a year ago – and wouldn't it be sweet irony if an anchorer won this week?

Group 2: Graham DeLaet: I hopped off the bandwagon briefly last week and he pulled another top-10 finish. Not gonna let it happen again.

Group 3: Roberto Castro: Last week's runner-up available in Group 3? A year after finishing T-7 here, everyone should be picking him.

Group 4: Kenny Perry: There is only one 2013 major champion in this field – and that's Perry, who claimed the Senior Players on Sunday.
