Callaway goes formal with new shoes

In the rush to get all casual and comfortable with golf shoes these days, the industry often seems to overlook the golfer who fancies a more classic look even when he goes spikeless and cannot see himself in footwear that appears better suited for track athletes or boaters. That fellow wants something more traditional on his feet, and Callaway Golf officials say that is exactly what they are trying to provide with their new Master Staff shoes.

Available in two colors, black and dark brown, the Master Staff is made of premium leather uppers with a leather lining and what company technicians describe as RainSport/DrySport Technology to ensure each pair is waterproof. And Callaway offers a two-year warranty attesting to that feature.

In addition, the company has included an Ortholite molded insert and a so-called Comfort Tech Gel tongue in the Master Staff so the shoes are ultra-comfortable. A lightweight TPE midsole made of a new compound of recycled materials is designed to enhance comfort, as well as bolster support. Then, there is the gum rubber outsole, which utilizes an array of nubs to improve traction and grip in all conditions.

“We tried to be more aggressive with the grip in the Master Staff, and they grip better than any other spikeless shoes we have made to date,” says Kent Richard, who heads up footwear for Callaway Golf. “We wanted to improve overall performance in that regard and at the same time, elevate the style component of the spikeless category, making this offering a bit dressier and a little more appealing to that consumer wanting a more classic, yet contemporary appearance with golf shoes he can wear on and off the course.”
