Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open - course preview

justin timberlake golf logoThis week the PGA Tour returns to TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas for the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. GCSAA Certified Golf Course Superintendent Dale Hahn explains that while the fairways may not look as green on TV because a few cool nights have sent the bermudagrass into early dormancy, the players should love it because it will play firmer and faster.

Hahn has narrowed nine of the fairways this year, planted pine trees along the par 5 holes No. 9 and 16, and raised the bermudagrass rough from 2.5 to 3 inches, but the biggest change is the par 5 No. 3 will be played as a par 4 this year, making this a 7,243-yard par 71.

No. 17 is the signature hole at TPC Summerlin. It is a 196-yard par 3 over water to a green sloping left toward water and heavily bunkered on the right.

The bentgrass greens are smooth and rolling 11 feet on the Stimpmeter. Outstanding weather is expected all week.

Hahn and TPC Summerlin have won multiple GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards and were the first in Nevada to earn Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program certification. Hahn has been working with the Southwest Nevada Water Authority the last few years to convert seven acres of turfgrass to native desert landscape, increasing native wildlife habitat to 26 acres and reducing expenses as well as water consumption. Hahn and TPC Summerlin have further reduced its reliance on potable water by purchasing effluent water from a new, nearby water treatment plant.
