Clarke Equipment Getting Too Good

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Add Darren Clarke to those who think golf equipment has just about become too good for the courses.
The games changed, said Clarke. Youve got to hit it 300 yards and straight.
I do agree that the distance that people are hitting it, we are soon going to overpower the best golf courses in the world. But it would also be interesting just to let it go, and see how far we can actually go. Because theres going to come a stage where everybody is going to hit it that far, but youre going to have to start losing control sooner or later at the moment, if youre with the right equipment, youre on the right side of it.
Scott Says Goodbye to Dubai, Qatar
Australias Adam Scott says he will not play in either Dubai the first week in March or in Qatar the next week. The reason, of course, is the threat of war in nearby Iraq.
I love the golf over there, I love Dubai, said Scott, a European Tour regular. And Qatar, obviously, I won there last week and would love to go back. I feel with everything going on over there now, I dont feel like risking anything for a couple of weeks of golf. Im sure Ill go back there in the future, because its a great spot. But I just feel its a big risky to go over there.
Tiger Woods said he is still uncertain whether he will go to Dubai.
I havent made my decision yet, he said. Check tomorrow.
It's a Good Format -- Sometimes
Nick Price won again, this time over Niclas Fasth, and he says sometimes he enjoys this format. Then again, sometimes he doesnt enjoy it.
Yesterday, I played really well and shot 68 and would have probably have beaten maybe 59 guys in the field, he said. But if you come up against one of the other five and play like that and get beaten, then it is goodnight and that is it.
It all depends on the matches you get, and all I try to do is just play one shot at a time and try not to get too far ahead of myself and worry who I have to play in the next round. When I play my best, that is always what I have done, just get to the first tee, hit the ball in the fairway, and then worry about the next shot.
Rose Heads to Florida for Tune-up
Justin Rose is out of the Match Play tournament, so it is off to Orlando for some polishing for the 22-year-old Englishman.
Im going down to David Leadbetters place in Florida, he said. Then Im looking forward to getting down to Florida and playing a few more tournaments leading up to the Masters.
Lonard Learning a Match Play Lesson
Peter Lonard advanced to the third round with a 5-and-4 win over Phil Tataurangi, which is something of a rarity for him in match play.
It does play on your mind and is something I still have to get used to, he said. Im enjoying the challenge, it is a little confusing at times, wouldnt like to play it every week, but it is interesting to play golf in a different manner to the norm, where you have to think differently over different shots.
The other professional match play event I played was the Australian Match Play in 1990. I didnt have any idea of any of the rules or anything, so it was a little surprise when I went out in the first round to Brad Hughes. Hopefully, Ive learned a little since then.
