Tiger Disappointed But Not Pessimistic Yet

RSS

The scorecard said 69, just 1-under-par, but the memories of Saturday afternoon seemed like the score that was so much lower. Putts that grazed the edge instead of dropping in the cup meant Tiger Woods is at 4-over-par after three rounds of the U.S. Open, instead of even-par or 1-under.

It could have been a good one, said Woods, grimacing at the thought of lost shots. It could really have been a good one. I hit a lot of good putts that grazed the edge. I think it could have been four or five shots lower.

But - thats just the way it is.

The leaders are far ahead, but Woods has climbed steep hills before. A good finish is certainly a possibility, a win not completely out of the question.

If I go out and play the way I did today, and I make a few more putts, who knows? said Tiger. I might have a chance, but I need to go out there and do what I can, and that is to try and execute golf shots the way I know I can.

Woods was eight shots behind as the interrogation was in process. Retief Goosen, Mark Brooks and J.L. Lewis hadnt even teed off yet, but their 4-under scores were in contrast to Tigers 4-over. Eight shots behind seems like an impossible assignment, even for someone like Woods, who has won the last four major championships. But, Tiger was a bit irritated that some counted him out.

Not that far behind, only eight back, said Woods. In a U.S. Open, thats not really as much as you might think.

If I was playing in the Bob Hope, eight back, youre not looking too good. But I think being eight back ' as of right now ' its a tough spot. But ' you know what, if I go out there and play a good, solid round tomorrow, you never know. Im really not that angry at myself, because Ive tried. I tried as hard as I could.

And if it doesnt work out, Woods understands. He has tried. He doesnt think he is invincible, even if there are some who do.

I understand that you really cant be too disappointed if you try as hard as you can, he said. And you guys know me pretty good. I dont dog it. I give it everything I have and no regrets. And thats one of the reasons why I play that way, so I can feel that way in the end.
