Veterans Duke It Out for 20 Holes

RSS

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Veterans Jay Haas and Nick Price battled it out Friday with the 49-year-old Haas eventually prevailing over the 46-year-old Price on a magnificent shot on the 20th hole. The ball almost dropped into the cup before stopping less than a foot away.

It was fun being with Nick, said Haas. We talked quite a bit until toward the end. Both of us were kind of gasping a little bit, leaking oil and hitting a couple of questionable shots.

It was back and forth all day. We both gave each other maybe two holes Nick, I dont think he played as well as he could play, obviously. He hit a couple of wayward drives. But it was just ' to end it like I did was just such a bonus, and to still be here is pretty amazing.

Clarke Remembers Win Over Woods

Darren Clarke continued on a collision course with Tiger Woods to reprise their 2000 Match Play finals. A repeat, says Clarke, would be the ultimate.

Yeah, it would be, he said. It would be up there. Winning the European Open in Dublin a couple of years ago was a big thing for me, because nobody from Ireland won at home for 20 years.

But in terms of tournaments, this would certainly be the highlight so far.

Back to Smith for Kelly

Jerry Kelly visited with putting guru Scotty Cameron, but eventually decided to return to Rick Smith, who is his swing coach.

He told me to go back the way Jerry Kelly putts, said Kelly. At the beginning of the year I tried to putt like (Brad) Faxon and Tiger (Woods). I worked on it all off-season, trying to stay steady with my head and not move my torso, stay really calm through the stroke.

My body doesnt work that way. I saw Scotty. He said, Well, the way you putt and the way you rock, you get closed on the way back, and if you dont follow through, its closed.

I tried opening the putter head. That wasnt me. I went back to my old putter this week. I tried as hard as I could to go to the way I putt I put my old trusty back in, and I putted fantastic so far.
