As the concept of “performance layering” has become increasingly popular in golf, so has that category among outerwear makers. And several companies are vying to meet the demand for garments that are as much science as they are style – and that give players the ability to add or shed during a round as temperatures and weather change.
Among the most notable brands in that marketplace is Sunice. Founded in Alberta, Canada, in 1976 and now based in Montreal, it started as a maker of technical outerwear for skiers and mountain climbers. But Sunice began getting into the royal and ancient game in the early 1990s and now caters primarily to golfers. And one of its latest products – the Superlite Pullover – is specifically designed for those men and women golfers who like to layer.
The men’s Superlite Pullover offering is called the Olie. It is a zip pullover made of a polyester/Spandex blend and available in four colors – black/shadow, pure white/royal, midnight/shadow and charcoal/lime. The garment features contrast flat lock stitching detail as well as reflective zipper tape and a framed chest pocket. As for the women’s version, which is called Jada, it boasts the same fabric and styling details as the Olie, minus the chest pocket. But it has a more feminine silhouette and comes in a different palette of colors – black/pure white, pure white/dove, and charcoal/berry.
Both the Olie and Jada pullovers have a clean contemporary look. But Sunice officials are quick to point out that the garments are as much about function as they are fashion.
“They are great layering pieces with thermal properties that allow you to wear them in a number of ways,” says Mark Fletcher, president of the Fletcher Leisure Group, which owns Sunice. “You can wear them over a golf shirt or turtleneck on a cool, dry day when it is blowing, or underneath one of our waterproof jackets when it is raining.
'The pullover has a close-to-body fit with lots of stretch so you can swing easily. And the fabric has what we call good loft and is constructed so you can maintain body warmth. Yet, it is also light and comfortable, very smooth to the touch, and absolutely silent. It’s perfect for golfers who need to manage in a micro climate.”
Both the Olie and Jada can be found in golf pro shops and selected off-course retailers.
