2012 hero Kaymer eyeing another Ryder Cup spot

RSS

This could be the most hotly contested Ryder Cup ever – and we’re talking about just making the team.

So, each Monday, GolfChannel.com will take a way-too-early look at the players who are vying for one of the 12 spots on the team. Nine players make the squad via their respective points list, and both captain Tom Watson and Paul McGinley will have three wild-card picks apiece.

AMERICANS

The current top 12:

1. Bubba Watson, 6,704

2. Jimmy Walker, 5,379

3. Dustin Johnson, 4,812

4. Matt Kuchar, 4,684

5. Jordan Spieth, 4,422

6. Jim Furyk, 4,302

7. Rickie Fowler, 3,831

8. Jason Dufner, 3,466

9. Patrick Reed, 3,132

10. Phil Mickelson, 3,095

11. Chris Kirk, 3,020

12. Zach Johnson, 2,888

Notes:

• Dustin Johnson likely locked up a spot on the team with his T-4 finish at Pinehurst. He moved from No. 4 to No. 2, and he’s looking for his third consecutive Ryder Cup appearance

• Rickie Fowler, who dazzled during his 2010 debut at Celtic Manor, is now in the conversation after his T-2 finish. He moved from No. 18 all the way to No. 7, inside the top-9 bubble

• Phil Mickelson’s worst start as a pro has put his automatic spot in jeopardy. Near the top of the list after his 2013 Open victory, Lefty is now outside the top 9 after a disappointing week at Pinehurst

• Of the 11 players who finished T-9 or better at the Open, seven were Americans

• This week’s Where-Is-Tiger? update: down from No. 65 to No. 67

Notes:

• Henrik Stenson, who finished T-4 at Pinehurst, was the only other European player who finished inside the top 10 at the Open
