All together now: Americans united in course praise

RIO DE JANEIRO – Rickie Fowler has taken two laps around the Olympic Golf Course. Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson arrived only a day ago and first their first glimpse of the Gil Hanse-design on Tuesday.

The American foursome is unanimous in praise.

“First time around was definitely a learning experience but it’s a really fun course to play,” Fowler said Tuesday, comparing it, like many others have, with Australia’s sandbelt courses. “Gil did a really good job of taking nothing and turning it into a great golf course without really having any time to make changes or adjustments.”

Reed only played the first nine holes and plans for a full round on Wednesday.

“The golf course is great,” he said. “It’s in perfect shape and the greens are rolling really true. It’s going to be fun, can’t wait to get started.”

Watson, Kuchar and Fowler played all 18 holes. The four will join together Tuesday night to attend swimming, where American’s Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky are headliners.

“The golf course is beautiful, the layout is unbelievable,” Watson said. “There’s nothing that we could ask for that they haven’t already done. Doesn’t mean we’re going to play well, it just means we love what we see.”
