Amateur Lee impresses veteran Webb

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Minjee Lee impressed Hall of Famer and fellow Aussie Karrie Webb with her performance in Thursday’s start of the International Crown.

Lee, the youngest player in the event at 18, and the only amateur, made all four of the birdies in her fourballs pairing with Webb, helping them defeat South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi and I.K. Kim, 2 up, at Caves Valley Golf Club.

“I think that we combined really well,” Webb said. “I made some solid pars for us, and I let Minjee make all the birdies for us. So that was nice, to sit back and watch her play really well, and perform really well under pressure.”

Lee is the No. 1 amateur in the world and was the 2012 U.S. Girls' Junior champ. She won an Australian Ladies Professional Golf event this year and nearly won a Ladies European Tour event.

“I was a little bit nervous starting off today,” Lee said. “Like I should be, right? We heard the national anthem, and just the atmosphere was kind of a little nerve wracking, but exciting as well.”

Webb said Lee settled in quickly.

“Just really proud of her performance,” Webb said. “It’s fun to watch and we'll be watching it for many years to come.”
