NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – The good news, at least for those in favor of PGA Tour golf in greater New York City, is that Barclays, NYC’s default title sponsor since 2005, has re-upped to sponsor the playoff event through 2016.
The bad news for the vast majority of Tour players disenchanted by the Liberty National layout in 2009 is that the much-maligned New Jersey track will return to The Barclays rotation in 2013. That news was tempered slightly by the additional announcement that the event will be played at the famed Bethpage Black course in 2012 and 2016.
“Over the years there have been very few times where we’ve played a golf course for the first time that we don’t get a lot of input on what it ought to be, and particularly true when you play a new golf course,” Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said on Wednesday. “(Liberty National) is one of the most stunning settings for professional golf there is on the planet and we want to take advantage of that.”
Numerous architectural changes will be made to the course before the circuit’s kickoff playoff event returns in 2013, just don’t expect the rank-and-file to withhold judgment until then.
